INTERVIEW: Battlerite

Sweden-based Stunlock Studios is developing a new arena-based PVP game, Battlerite, set in the same world as their first game Bloodline Champions. We sat down to chat with Johan Ilves and pick his brains about the game, their studio, development process and details about the upcoming game. Read on to find out what it’s gonna take to fight in the arenas of Battlerite.   Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how the studio was founded? Hi! I’m, Johan Ilves, Marketing Director and Music Composer at Stunlock Studios. I’m the man behind the “Dead Island: Epidemic” soundtrack and have a history in sales. INTERVIEW: Failbetter Games

The excellent rogue-like game, Sunless Sea, is getting a big expansion later this year, called Zubmariner, so we jumped at the opportunity to chat with Hannah Flynn from Failbetter Games studio about their beginnings and the challenges working on a game like this presents.   – Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how the studio was founded? Failbetter was founded in 2009 by Alexis Kennedy and Paul Arendt, and our first game was Fallen London. Alexis wrote the words and the code, and Paul drew the pictures. I joined in 2014 as communications, and we’re now a team of 15. (But Paul still draws almost all of the pictures.) – Was the idea of making Lovecraftian rogue-like the first one studio…

REVIEW: Kingston HyperX Cloud II

Kingston is a brand best known for its memory modules and later SSDs but in the meantime they have ventured quite seriously in to gaming hardware waters. They use the HyperX brand for that and at the moment the offer headphones and mouse pads. One of our editors is using the first generation of HyperX Cloud headphones for some time and is quite happy with them but know we wanted to see what the second generation has to offer. The packaging, appearance Cloud II headphones come in a very luxury box that contains the headset, a detachable microphone, extra cables, a carrying bag and the manual. We were particularly pleased with finding two pairs of ear cups, one leather and one made from velour fabric.…

REVIEW: Cornerstone: The Song of Tyrim

Oh, what a buggy mess this game is! Cornerstone is full of nasty surprises such as lousy controls, terrible camera, unpolished collision detection and the worst of them all – game breaking bugs that force you to start all over again. The mix of depression and frustration that filled our hearts when we discovered that the bird’s nest with a key is not on top of Alma’s chimney – and that it will never appear there unless you start the game again from the beginning – is something we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemy. Swedish developers from Overflow Games are apparently not in a hurry to fix that and other bugs, since the patch may or may not be released “in the next couple…

REVIEW: Salt and Sanctuary

Many of you will know what transitioning from 2D to 3D did to some cult games. Successful recipes got smudged, precious ingredients spoiled… In one word, famous titles failed miserably just by following the latest trends and developments in technology. Why is that so? Many think it has to do with the fact that by changing the environment, i.e. the number of dimensions we see the game in, changes its focus. In other words, the focus of the originality and attraction of the game would become watered down beyond recognition. Now that this “tragic” time of “dimensional transition” is over and many developers have continued their old hits only through old 2D gameplay, aiming at nostalgia at the same time, here we have something completely…

REVIEW: Ratchet and Clank

New-gen consoles have been in our homes for a while now, and it’s only been a matter of time before a franchise that’s almost 15 years old now makes its debut on Playstation 4. Ratchet and Clank are finally here and I have to admit, they look better than ever! To be frank, it just wouldn’t do if they looked worse, but never fear – guys and girls from Insomniac Games have worked hard and here we have a true, pure-blooded triple A space adventure! The game’s release was timed to coincide with the first animated Ratchet and Clank movie’s release in theatres, so the fans will have two things to be joyful about. We still didn’t get a chance to see the movie, but…

REVIEW: Quantum Break

It seems that over the last decade and a half, television and cinema have switched roles. The television nowadays invests in intriguing and thoughtful shows (Breaking Bad, The Wire, Black Mirror), while the cinema mostly invests in blockbusters (The Avengers, X-Men, Hunger Games). Previously, TV shows were mostly sitcoms (of course, with exceptions), while we went to the movies to watch The Usual Suspects, Fight Club, etc. Quantum Break is trying to go one step further and connect a video game with a live action show. They’re not the first who’s tried something like this (Battlefield: Hardline – we all know better than to talk about that game), but even if it looks like a cheap show, at least it look authentic. It’s a shame…

REVIEW: Killer Instinct

There’s an internet meme many of you know, but many won’t remember the fighting game from which it originated. The so-called Combo breaker shout, or more accurately “C-c-c-combo breaker!” was and still is the trade mark of Killer Instinct, one of the fiercest rivals of Mortal Kombat from the tail end of the previous century. Many years have passed and KI is back in style. This year, the game entered its third season and with it came the PC edition that we tested. To be frank, this is the best time to start playing the game because many problems have been sorted out and the whole experience is much better. One of the most impressive things in the game is the choice characters, i.e. their…
