On the main stage of RuneFest 2026, Jagex officially unveiled RuneScape 4, a brand-new MMO set in the world of the famous franchise. It is the first RuneScape title to be developed in Unreal Engine, but the studio says it will play like a “typical Jagex game”. It was also revealed that the project was originally conceived as an expansion for Dragonwilds, but quickly grew into a standalone game. Development is still at a very early stage, so we’ll probably be waiting a while.
“We embraced the idea of an expansion with great creative ambition and enthusiasm. However, when we saw the first prototypes, we realized development was heading toward something far bigger that deserved to become a game of its own.”
The RuneScape 4 teaser was originally posted on Jagex’s official channels, but was later taken down after it emerged that it had been made with generative AI. Jagex distanced itself, saying the trailer wasn’t produced in-house but by a third-party studio, and added that it strongly opposes the use of this technology.
