Guillermo del Toro loves video games – so much so that he spent several years trying to get a project called Insane off the ground. As a renowned film director, he also tried his hand at adapting a cult franchise for the screen, but that venture ended disastrously.
In a new interview with IGN, del Toro revealed that he once tried to make a film based on BioShock. Setting aside the fundamental differences between film and video games as mediums, the director also ran into insurmountable obstacles in communicating with the IP holders.
“There are a lot of similarities in terms of framing and directing scenes, but the processes of making a film and making a game are drastically different. I experienced this first-hand when I tried to make my own game, Insane. And when it comes to adapting a game… We had several conversations about a BioShock adaptation. I’ll be completely honest – I’d describe the whole experience as an absolute disaster. That idea is dead now, and I don’t believe it will ever be revived.”
When it comes to his favorite games, the Hellboy director says he loves Left 4 Dead, Death Stranding, Shadow of the Colossus, Dead Cells and, of course, BioShock. Still, he singled out one game as truly special.
“I spend every free moment playing Angry Birds, and I’m very good at it!”
As for BioShock, its film adaptation is reportedly still in the works, but under a different director.
