It sounds unbelievable, but we’re just 42 days away from GTA 6. Ahead of the release of their magnum opus, the Rockstar team sat down for an in-depth conversation with IGN, giving us even better insight into the gameplay and the charms of Vice City. It’s the full transcript of an earlier interview with Rob Nelson of Rockstar North.
Below are the highlights from the new interview.
- One segment focuses on the already known ability to switch control from Lucia to Jason and vice versa, no matter where they are – the interview mentions a situation where the player takes control of a naked Jason in the shower
- You’ll be able to chat with passengers while driving a taxi, but you can hand this activity over to the AI if you just want to drive and listen to the radio
- Pedestrians will react very dynamically to your presence: They’ll notice if you’re following them, eavesdropping on their conversations or generally acting strange
- Nelson explained that the variety of situations on the streets of Leonida is enormous, and the same scenario can play out in many ways depending on your behavior
- Pedestrians are far more dangerous and capable, and some even carry concealed weapons: Some will attack other pedestrians, some will try to stop you in the middle of a crime, while others will try to flee
- Jason and Lucia function as independent characters – while their chemistry is a big part of the game, they’re not joined at the hip
- In GTA 6 you can rob practically any establishment and steal anything
- As in GTA 5, you can approach a single objective in multiple ways, and that applies to robberies too. You can blow the safe with explosives to get in and out faster, but that will draw more attention and potentially reduce your take. You can also interrogate employees or find the safe combination, which takes longer but lets you get the most out of it
- If you wait too long, you may step outside to find the police have already surrounded the building. That opens up another dynamic situation in which you have to figure out how to escape
- Nelson noted that even splitting up Jason and Lucia can reduce the pressure from pursuing police

- Stealing cars is now more complex, reflecting the times we live in – cars have more security systems, and newer vehicles have complex obstacles you need to overcome
- You can successfully break into a car only for the police to be alerted thanks to some kind of tracking system
- Escaping the police is now harder because of video surveillance. The clothes you wear, your hairstyle, the person you’re traveling with, the car you drive – all of it builds a picture of you as an individual, and the more serious the crime, the harder you’ll have to work to get away
- If the police launch a major offensive, it can sometimes be hard to escape by car unless it’s a very fast vehicle or a sports bike. Usually the best option is to change clothes and/or continue on foot through hidden back alleys
- Players will have more passive interaction with social media than previously expected – you’ll mostly be able to browse other people’s profiles rather than directly comment or build your own profile
- As we’ve seen in earlier gameplay footage, you’ll be able to incapacitate enemies by shooting their legs and arms. Like in Red Dead Redemption 2, you can shoot weapons out of their hands, after which they’ll flee into cover or try to find another weapon
- Nelson stressed that the trailers so far have shown only a tiny part of the city, which we already know is huge. He added that GTA 6 will have massive replay value
GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A release date for the PC version has not been confirmed yet.
